How to Change the Call Screen Background for Incoming Calls on Your Samsung Phone

Posted on November 19, 2022

You can customize almost anything on a Samsung Galaxy phone; you can even set a custom background for incoming calls. Here is how to do it.

By default, your Samsung phone shows you a moving color gradient video preset on the call screen when you receive an incoming call. But unknown to many, you can actually customize the call background to display any photo or video from your gallery.

Cool right? Let’s see how to do this.

How to set a custom ringtone on a Samsung phone

You may want to customize your call screen wallpaper for the same reason you customize your home screen wallpaper: to make it look more beautiful.

Follow the steps below to do so:

  1. Open the Phone app, tap on the three-dot menu and select settings.
  2. Go to Call Background > Background. You’ll see a few video presets to choose from that you might want to consider.
  3. Tap on the + and select your desired photo or video from gallery.
  4. If you have selected a video longer than 15 seconds, you will need to trim it by touching the Prune (the scissors icon) and then press Done.
  5. You can choose to use the audio in your video as the new ringtone by turning on Use video sound as ringtone. We do not recommend enabling this option, as the audio in your video may not give the same impression as a caller’s actual ringtone, which could cause you to miss calls.
  6. Faucet Set as call background to end.

The background image or video you set here will be applied to all contacts. If you want to set custom call backgrounds for each contact, which you can do if you’ve upgraded to One UI 5, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Contacts app and select a contact.
  2. Faucet Edit > View More > Call Background > Background.
  3. Tap on the + and select your desired photo or video from gallery.
  4. Faucet Set as call background to end.

Your new custom call screen is now set. Go ahead and try it. And while you’re at it, you might also want to check out how to set up home screen shortcuts on your Samsung phone to quickly check missed calls, search contacts or create a new one with a single tap.

For best results, make sure the photo or video you select as the background for your new call is high-resolution and preferably in portrait orientation. If you select a horizontal photo or video, your phone will have to zoom in on it, which will reduce the image quality.

Customize your call background on Samsung

One of the best things about Samsung phones is how customizable they are. If you are not satisfied with the default look of your device, you can completely revamp it without having to download any third-party launcher just by using the built-in customization features.
