Is the Xbox App Not Working on Windows? Try These Fixes

If the Xbox app has stopped working on your Windows computer, you’re not alone. Several users have complained about problems downloading or opening games from the Xbox app on Windows. Fortunately, it is possible to fix this annoying problem.

1. Check your internet connection

An incomplete Internet connection may prevent you from downloading or starting games from the Xbox app. Therefore, before spending time on any advanced solutions, run a quick internet speed test on your PC to check your connection. You can also try switching to a different network connection if one is available.

2. Correct the date and time on your PC

Having your PC set to the wrong date or time might not seem like a big deal, but it can lead to a whole host of problems. In this case, you can block the Xbox app from communicating with the servers, preventing you from using it. You can easily avoid these problems by setting Windows to set the correct time automatically. These are the steps you need to follow.

  1. Press win + me to launch the Settings app.
  2. select time and language from the left pane.
  3. Click on Date and Time.
  4. Enable the switch next to set time automatically.

Restart the Xbox app after this and see if it works fine.

3. Sign out and return to the Xbox app

Authentication problems with your account can also cause the Xbox app to stop working. One way to fix these issues is to sign out of the Xbox app and sign back in.

In the Xbox app, click your username in the upper left corner and select disconnect. Then click on the Check in and enter your account details. Then try using the app again.

4. Reinstall the game services application

The Gaming Services app on Windows makes it easy to install games through the Windows Store. If the Gaming Services app is experiencing issues, the Xbox app may redirect you to the Microsoft Store when you try to start a game or display error code 0x00000001.

You can try reinstalling the Gaming Services app on Windows to see if that resolves the issue. This is how you can do it.

  1. Press win + S to open the search menu.
  2. Writes Windows PowerShell in the box and select Execute as an administrator.
  3. select Yes when the User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears.
  4. In the console, paste the following command and press Get into to uninstall the Gaming Services application.
     get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers 
  5. Run the following command to open the Gaming Services app page in the Microsoft Store.
     start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

  6. Click on the To install button to download the application.

Restart your PC after this and try to use the Xbox app again.

5. Run the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

The Windows Store App Troubleshooter is a built-in tool that can scan your apps for common issues and suggest solutions accordingly. You can use this tool if the Xbox app won’t open or work on your computer.

To run the Windows Store apps troubleshooter:

  1. Open the Start Menu and click on the gear icon to launch the Settings app.
  2. In it System tab, click Solve problems.
  3. select Other troubleshooters.
  4. Click on the Rush button next to Windows Store Apps and follow the onscreen prompts to run the troubleshooter.

6. Repair or reset the Xbox app

If the Windows Store apps troubleshooter doesn’t find any issues, you can try to repair the Xbox app manually through the Settings app. Please note that this process will delete all app data.

To repair the Xbox app on Windows:

  1. Right-click the Start icon or press Win + X to open the Power User menu.
  2. select installed applications of the list.
  3. Scroll down to locate the xbox application in the list.
  4. Click on the three dot menu icon next to it and select Advanced Options.
  5. Scroll down to the Restart section and click Fix.

Windows will try to repair the application. You should see a check mark next to the Repair button once the process is complete. If the problem persists, you can try to reset the application from the same menu.​​​​​​

7. Update the Xbox app

If you haven’t updated the Xbox app in a while, you might have problems using it. Additionally, using an outdated version of the Xbox app also causes you to miss out on the latest features. Therefore, it is always a good idea to enable automatic app updates in Windows or learn how to update Windows apps manually. Alternatively, you can update the Xbox app manually from the Microsoft Store.

Launch the Microsoft Store and use the search bar to locate the xbox application Click on the Update to install any pending updates for the Xbox app, and then try using it again.

While you’re at it, we also recommend installing any pending Windows updates. To do this, open the Settings application and go to the windows update section. Click on the Search for updates and install any pending system updates on your computer. After this, the Xbox app should work fine.

8. Leave the Xbox Insider Program

If you signed up for the Xbox Insider program to get early access to new features and games, it may affect the performance of the Xbox app. You can opt out of the Xbox Insider program to see if it makes a difference.

To exit the Xbox Insider Program:

  1. In the Xbox app, click your username in the upper left corner and select Xbox Insider Program.

Troubleshooting the Xbox app on Windows
